Best apple crumble: before doing the crumble bit, brown your apples in butter and sugar until caramelised (don't move them around too much while they're caramelising, let them do their thing). Then sprinkle on the crumble, and let it brown in the oven for longer than you usually would (add an extra 10-15 minutes). Browned buttery goodness awaits - the picture ain't great, but the taste sure is.
