Sometimes, on hot summer nights sitting alone at the grill while cooking dinner, I think about my past. It is rich with accidental stories, some about food, most are not.
On this particular occasion I found myself out on Long Island at the beach house of FDR's niece and his grand niece, if that makes any sense. There was a whole group of us, maybe 15 people, having an amazing summer evening. We spent several nights there, the first night I (long before I became a chef) and two friends cooked for everyone. The most memorable night though was sitting in the main hall of the beach house that was built sometime in the 1920's while Roosevelt's niece cooked for us all. She was the grand dame of the evening and the evening was nothing short of spectacular. Appetizers, a very alcoholic punch and roasted bluefish with onions and gin were dinner, games followed, as did a late night beach walk. While I can't get bluefish grilled swordfish, gin, and onions brought back a night that I will never forget. #f52grill #fish #foodmemories #longisland #seafood #dinner
