Author Notes

This is the best food, ever. I like to use thick slices of bread and smash on a fat layer of avocado, so you get contrast between the crunch of toast, the soft innards of the bread, and the creamy avocado. Flaky salt is key; express yourself with extra toppings. —Marian Bull

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1 slice of good bread (your choice: whole wheat, sourdough, and rye are all A+ options)
  • 1/3 ripe avocado (up to 1/2)
  • 1 pinch Flaky salt
  • 1 splash Olive oil (optional)
  • 1 pinch Black pepper, red pepper flakes. paprika, or ground cumin (optional)
Directions
  1. Toast your bread on both sides. Smash on avocado with a fork. Top with flaky salt -- don't be stingy -- and any other toppings that fit your fancy.
  2. Repeat as necessary.

Best breakfast or snack ever! I use a seeded bread, toasted. Then top it with 1/2 smashed avocado, one hard boiled egg broken up, tomato slice and top it with Everything Bagel seasoning! Weight Watchers points 4! Thanks FOOD 52 for this and many other great recipes.

I love Za'atar and/or Sumac on my avocado toast. These two spices improve the taste of almost everything.

Connie, your suggestion of lemon juice tomato and onion makes it more a guacamole sensation. Tried it for breakfast but better for later in the day I'm thinking. This is a yummy favorite.

I add a small amount of lemon juice to the avocado. I top with thin sliced tomato and onion, then a over easy cooked egg. Yum!

Alan November 6, 2015
I bet a poached egg would be totally fantastic on top as well.

Instructions unclear. Stuck at step 1.

1/10 would not eat again.

My new favorite afternoon meal...I add roasted chicken slices to it. It's just so decadent.

A favorite rendition: multi-grain bread topped with avocado mash, a sprinkling of salty cotija cheese and a big splash of tomatillo salsa.

In Durban, South Africa, the busiest stall at a local craft fair was pumping out thick slices of fresh bread topped with a schmeared avocado half. SaIt, pepper & chili sauce on the side table. The start of a new addiction! ALWAYS stand in line for the busy stalls!

For anyone thinking avo on toast is trendy; not true. My family has grown avocados for three generations and have been eating this throughout. Best if you can get a Fuerte avocado, though they are hard to come by these days.

I love toast with vegemite and avocado! The savouriness of the vegemite + cool creamy avocado on warm crunchy toast is AMAZING

When I feel like the avocado isn't decadent enough on its own I add some crispy bacon slices.

The best combination for this that I've come up with up to date is avocado toast + roast red pepper & eggplant spread + smoked cheese, and then put in the microwave for half a minute or so for the cheese to melt... so amazing.

One of my favorite things to eat for breakfast. If I'm feeling extra healthy, I top it with pea sprouts and a little lemon juice.

Rebecca March 12, 2014

We make this all the time from a Deborah Madison recipe (more of a suggestion than a recipe). It's a sandwich with smashed avocado, cilantro, lime, salt and pepper, if I remember correctly. Now it's just an automatic Saturday lunch, or pack an avocado, sliced lime, salt and pepper and bread packed lunch. The Container Store sells tiny salt and pepper containers.

My idea of heaven is when you add some hot sauce like cholula or tapatio on top. MMMMMM.

Alex March 6, 2014
Simple and absolutely delicious! I could eat this for every meal of the day.

It's even better with a little light spread of Veganaise on the toasted bread under the avocado!

Here in Chile avocado on toast is a staple of most mid afternoon snacks or when people have you over for tea, there's so many variations you can make, virtually to satisfy anyone's taste, well except for those who don't like avocados :D

Marian B. March 5, 2014
I need to go to Chile.

Here in El Salvador, guacamole is made with avocado, hard boiled egg, and a little lemon juice. I have been known to just lather that chunky mixture on toast. All previous suggestions sound wonderfully tasty! Thanks!!

For breakfast i cut a hardboiled egg in half, remove the yolk and spoon in avocado. It's the best!!

Robert March 5, 2014
I think I would flip that! Take out the avocado seed and replace it with a hard boiled egg

Bri March 5, 2014
Robert! I was just in El Salvador and I was served the typical guacamole. At first when I noticed the hard boiled eggs I was shocked. But it was delicious!

Marian B. March 5, 2014
I have to try this!

How funny to see this here! I eat this all the time. Truffle salt is good on top too...

Nick G. February 23, 2014
YES...truffle salt is fantastic with this...even better with a hard boiled egg mashed along with the avocado

This is one of my favorites for lunch--a whole avocado smashed with the juice of a lime but no olive oil and definitely the salt on top--especially during this unending winter it makes me think of summer!

Sipa February 20, 2014
I make this all the time but after toasting I rub the bread well with a large raw garlic clove and then drizzle a full-flavored olive oil over the top before sprinkling with my favorite French fleur de sel. My husband had never tasted avocado before we married and now it's a favorite of his too.

Jennifer S. February 19, 2014
This is a favorite of mine! I add thinly slice french breakfast radishes. Yum!

Wilma D. February 19, 2014
This simple, yet delicious and so satisfying. I do add a fried egg (a bit of coconut oil to fry) on top. A drizzle of olive oil...Heaven!!!

Really is one of the best and simplest meals ever. I had avocado toast for breakfast today! I just can't wait till summer when I can add a homegrown tomato with a bit of sea salt to the mix.

Being a Californian, I feel a burning obligation to comment on our most beloved berry. I would highly recommend a squeeze of fresh lemon at the end and (mostly because, when is it ever a bad choice?) the addition of a single fried egg. The optional spices are also, I think, best considered mandatory. Enjoy :)

AlohaHoya March 8, 2014
Lime juice fits the avos we grow here in Hawaii. Great paired with a banana!!!!

Jan R. February 18, 2014
This is my go-to lunch.. sometimes I add a little salsa to the mix!

i add a splash of lime or cilantro from time to time...also, slice a clove of fresh garlic and rub it on the toast before spreading the avocado...ummmm

Love that garlic-rubbing idea!
