Author Notes

Inspired by DC's Bethesda Bagels' Cinnamon Raisin Bagel, these homemade Apple Cinnamon Bagels are a healthier and protein packed option. Made with apple sauce and Greek yogurt, maple and cinnamon, raisins and walnuts are dotted throughout. They’re chewy and warmly spiced, just like a bakery bagel, and have that perfect amount of sweetness and spice in every bite. —Alexandra Tallulah

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1.25 cups unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1.25 cups full fat greek yogurt
  • .25 cups pure maple syrup
  • 6 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • .5 cups raisins
  • .5 cups raw walnuts, chopped
  • 1 egg, whisked
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk apple sauce, yogurt and maple. Fold in flour, cinnamon and baking powder, raisins and walnuts, then remove dough from bowl and knead to combine. Dough will be sticky, but manageable with lightly floured hands and surface.
  3. Divide dough into 12 equal balls, then shape each ball into a bagel. I’ve found this is most easily done by rolling the piece of dough into a 6” ‘snake’ then pressing the ends of the snake together to form a bagel O.
  4. Place on prepared baking sheet then lightly brush each with whisked egg. Bake for 35 minutes, until tops of bagels are golden. Cool completely before slicing and serving.
