Age-old traditions meet modern designs in Tantuvi textiles (“tantuvi” means “weaver” in Sanskrit). Designer Arati Rao collaborates with Ikat weavers in South India and dhurrie weavers of North India to re-interpret classic patterns while preserving the traditions of hand-spun, dyed and woven cottons and silks. All pieces are handwoven by cooperatives that use centuries-old looms and techniques. Rao started Tantvui after spending much of 2010 traveling throughout India. Inspired by that trip and her ancestral roots, she blends age-old tools, craft and patterns with a contemporary spin from Brooklyn artists.
