3 Things to Pick Up at the Market This Weekend

August 16, 2014

Here at Food52, we like to talk about what we’re buying at the market: what’s new, what’s exciting, the market's best finds. This is our water cooler talk. And now, we want you to join in.

Blistered Shishito Peppers

It's unavoidable -- with warm days, and nights that are starting to cool off, we’re beginning to straddle the seasons. With one foot firmly entrenched in summer, and the other edging towards fall, the Food52 editors are loading up on late summer favorites while keeping an eye out for early fall finds. Here's what we can’t wait to pick up from the market -- and why you should be adding it to your bag, too.

Shishito Peppers
Blistered, these make an easy, yet impressive, appetizer -- one that only demands a hot skillet, flaky salt, and fat lime wedges. You'll turn to them again and again for the remainder of the summer for both an addictive snack and a new standard pizza topping.

Melons
If, like us, you haven’t had enough melon yet this summer, make up for lost time this week. Pick up a watermelon. Or two. (Swaying your hips and humming “Do You Love Me” is not optional.) Keep your eyes peeled for varieties of melons you haven’t tried before -- Marian’s enjoying Sprite melon with a dollop of yogurt for a soothingly monochromatic breakfast.

Cranberry Beans
To keep them summery, enjoy them now in an arugula salad. And in the weeks ahead, serve them over a pile of polenta or blend them into a creamy soup.

Tell us: What are you adding to your market bag this week?
