Haiku52

A Haiku or Two, on Holiday Parties

December 13, 2014

Haiku52:
Our thoughts on food and cooking
In seventeen beats.

Here's a way to make your holiday party more fun: Get out scrap paper and a pile of pens and ask each of your guests to write a haiku (and, if you're feeling meta, ask them to write a haiku about holiday parties!). This is the result of our exercise:

Shop the Story

Kristen

My mother's hors d'oeuvres,
always cream cheese and canned fish.
Someday I'll grow up.

Sarah

are you my cousin
or a friend of my father?
either way, goodbye.

Marian

is it okay if I
just leave this party, go home,
and eat a pizza?

Kenzi

Why is the punch bowl
empty again? I swear some-
one just filled it up.

Nozlee

Drank too much again.
Everyone I know left.
Need more canapés.

I used to work at Food52. I'm probably the person who picked all of the cookie dough out of the cookie dough ice cream.

you'll always find me
parked by the cheese plate, shameless
but very happy

The first, in early
November: church choir reads carols
and has great potluck.

Eat all of the things
Drink all of the drinks too and
Sport festive mumu

Marian B. December 15, 2014
ah, the great mumu
a wardrobe essential for
any REAL woman.

Showing my age now,
once sewed a caftan with cuffs
reaching down to hem.

(mumu is much more sexy!)

My cousins like their
phones better than they like
me. Reasons to eat.

Too real.

They brought tidings of
great joy, hugs, laughter and love.
Mother served great food.
;o)

O punch bowl with ice ring
herbs eerily suspended in
ghostly frost

Make Deviled Eggs
Never Enough for Xmas Eve
Many happy family

Sincere gratitude
joining friends and family
Burnt things do not matter

Pegeen December 13, 2014
Why does the host
burn my hors d’oeuvres when warming?
Why does my drink get lost?

(Feeling a little Scrooge-like tonight, so I counted “hors d’oeuvres” as 2 syllables and not 3)

Sarah J. December 13, 2014
Fine with me!! Hors d'ouv-ruhs!

Pegeen December 13, 2014
Who is the author of this touching and true verse? Anyway, you got it right! :-)

holiday party:
it's supposed to be fun, right?
then what are these tears?

Cristina S. December 13, 2014
Marian, the answer is yes.

A woman after my own heart.
