Strategy at Farmers' Market

Ever find yourself overwhelmed by the variety at farmers' markets? Or caught yourself buying things you simply don't need? I often return with 10 varieties of kohlrabi, but without the tomatoes for which I originally went shopping. The Chicago Tribune has some great tips for how to get the most out of your farmers market shopping experience.

They advocate viewing farmers markets as more of a cultural experience, and less of a shopping trip - after all, if you are looking for perfect produce in perfect rows, go to a supermarket! Take your time, do a preliminary walk through, talk to the farmers, get a cup of coffee, and bring your recipes with you so that you can make last minute changes based on what looks good. (Or, better yet, bring your Food52 iPad app!)
