The First Foodie of the United States

In between raising two kids, tending to her home garden, and acting as First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama has found time to write a cookbook. American Grown, a compendium of recipes from the White House, also includes exposés on health, community, and our national food culture. Michelle steers clear of politics of state, substituting instead tips for blanching broccoli and a discussion of feel-good American agricultural values.

The book is out today, but YumSugar has already shared one of their favorite recipes -- White House Broccoli Soup. It is one of Michelle's healthy garden recipes, using a dab of light sour cream rather than milk or half and half. They recommend adding a little jalapeño-infused olive oil to perk it up, but other than that, the recipe is all Michelle's.

I love nothing more than a summer tomato (maybe add some balsamic, basil, and home-made mozz). In my free-time, I cook, read about cooking, farm, read about farming, and eat. Food is a basic necessity, but good food ought to be a fundamental right.
