Author Notes

My favorite street food when I visit Paris is by far the Jambon-Beurre. French style ham, good butter, gruyere cheese, accented by a tiny bit of dijon - all on a crusty baguette. What more could you want! This sandwich can be made quite a bit ahead of time and travels well. —meganvt01

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1 French baguette
  • 1/3 pound French ham, sliced thinly
  • 2 ounces aged gruyere - thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons European butter
Directions
  1. Slice the baguette lengthwise.
  2. Spread the softened butter on one side of the baguette. Spread the mustard on the other side (should be very thin).
  3. Add the sliced ham gruyere. Top with the other slice of baguette. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap. This sandwich can sit for up to a day - and even improve - in the refrigerator.

I bought a couple of fresh baked baguettes at the bakery on Saturday morning and made these for lunch. They were simple and delicious, and, as others have noted, brought back some great taste memories from visiting Europe. I wasn't able to find any French ham since I didn't plan ahead, but I substituted some thinly sliced Boar's Head unsmoked deli ham and it was still very yummy.

I left France in 1972 (now live in NC) and this is still my favorite sandwich.

This sounds simple and great! When my wife and I visited Paris we would buy (I think) one of these each for sustenance on our discovery jaunts. Question: There were times we had a sandwich with corn (which I love). Is that a variation of this sandwich? Thanks

When I returned from Paris, I tried to replicate those abfab sandwiches we ate. I used Euro butter, baguettes, and Emmentaler (which was on some of the sandwiches), but they were a disappointment. Because of you, I'm going to try again. Thanks!

Please...Jambon Beurre is just that: Ham and butter...and the bread of course.
Never cheese. That would be a different sandwich altogether. And of course, never mustard with either.
Simplicity is the hardest thing to achieve.

Hmm...why even bother to leave that comment? I made a sandwich inspired by a wonderful memory. Negativity has no place on food52 in my opinion.

J'adore jambon beurre. Like me mum used to say "Simple Mainbocher."

thank you! I was surprised at how much my homemade version worked! And I was surprised that it was easy to get French ham at my local Whole Foods, so great!

There is just something about that European butter that makes it soooo special :)

Oh, yes! This is the first thing I look for whenever I go to Paris. Nothing better.

This challenge is going to help my budget by satisfying a food memory rather than having to travel!

I hear you! I'm going to Italy and France with the daughter this summer and have this on my taste buds already.
