Author Notes

What’s for dinner? Whenever you’re making a meal out of the leftovers in the fridge, this is the dressing that ties it all together. And it’s the best dip for Tahini Chicken Schnitzel.

Tahini Ranch Dressing
Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup premium tahini
  • 1/4 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, chopped
  • 1/3 cup ice-cold water
  • 1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons white miso paste
  • 1 tablespoon silan date syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 6 chives, minced
Directions
  1. In a blender or food processor, combine the tahini, onion, garlic, water, lemon juice, olive oil, miso, date syrup, salt, mustard, and pepper. Blend until smooth and creamy. It should be the consistency of a creamy salad dressing, like ranch. Stir in the chives. Store in a closed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

I sent a note to the recipe author on her company's website so hopefully she'll answer about the date syrup. I did a bit of research and found that 1 date = 1 Tbsp of date syrup, so that could be helpful information here.

How much date syrup do we use? can I sub for maple syrup?

Amy Z. April 20, 2021
1 tablespoon! the date syrup is not as sweet as maple syrup...

Since my family avoids sugar and sweeteners of all kinds (both because of health reasons and because of taste preferences — nothing screws up a nice savory dish or sauce like the gratuitous addition of unnecessary sweetener) can the date syrup be omitted entirely? Would the addition of a non-sweet ingredient be a good substitution? And what would that ingredient be?

it's only 1 tablespoon but you could sub for some apple juice!

Apple juice is not a savory ingredient, but a sweet ingredient. I was looking for a savory ingredient to substitute. If there isn’t any, I’ll just skip it entirely.

yes, skip it entirely

Date syrup isn’t listed in the ingredients, but is in the directions. What amount of date syrup should be used? Thanks!

"silan date syrup" - 1 tablespoon!
