Well Chartreuse is a very strong flavor and tends to dominate the drink. I suspect most modern bartenders actually cut back on the Chartreuse but anyway, I wanted to see if I could use a different medicinal liqueur in place of Chartreuse to make the drink more balanced. Cynar came to mind - it's in the same family but less intensely herbal. Et voila! Ingredients
  • .75 ounces gin
  • .75 ounces lime juice
  • .75 ounces maraschino liqueur
  • .75 ounces Cynar liqueur
  • Lime wedge
Directions
  1. Squeeze a lime for some fresh lime juice.
  2. Mix all the liquid ingredients with ice in a shaker.
  3. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
  4. Variations: For simpler measurements, you can use 1 oz of everything, but that makes a pretty large drink. Of course, you can scale up to make several drinks at once. For variety muddle some mint or basil in the shaker with the gin before adding the other ingredients.
