Easy-peasy homemade dog treats you can whip together in no time and feel good about giving your pup. Try adding in bits of bacon for a very special treat (but give Fido those sparingly). —Erin Jeanne McDowell

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup natural, unsalted peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or use the oil that has separated from the natural peanut butter inside the jar)
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350º F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the peanut butter, water, and oil.
  3. Add the flours gradually, mixing until the mixture comes together to form a smooth dough, 2 to 3 minutes. (This can also be done by hand, though the kneading will take longer -- 6 to 8 minutes.)
  4. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thick. Cut out biscuits using a floured cookie cutter, and transfer to the prepared baking sheets. Leave at least 1/4 inch between each biscuit to ensure even baking (the biscuits don’t spread much).
  5. Bake until golden brown on the bottom and edges, about 12 to 18 minutes (depending on the size of the cookie cutter). Cool completely before serving to your pooch.

I always have three kinds of hot sauce in my purse. I have a soft spot for making people their favorite dessert, especially if it's wrapped in a pastry crust. My newest cookbook, Savory Baking, came out in Fall of 2022 - is full of recipes to translate a love of baking into recipes for breakfast, dinner, and everything in between!

I have not made them yet, but I have a picky granddog that I would love to make these for. He tends to like a softer treat. Do these tend to be harder?

Thanks,

Michelle

Could one use Oat Flour instead of wheat? Not fan of wheat and All purpose on a dog in a raw diet. The only treats she eats now are either single ingredient freeze dried or the Bocce brand, which are Oat based

WOW! I am so pleased with the results. Couldn't be happier (and the pups too) LOL. Thanks DAWG. See what I did there? Only thing I would do differently is add some vanilla and honey. I tried it and it was quite bland. You know what they say about bland foods... its NOT yummy. Even for the dogz. Also, a slice of turkey on top will make them the happiest pups in town. Just a few suggestions! (: If you're feeling real crazy, add a cheerio onto half of them or whatnot.

Made this and my doggie is so happy. I rolled the dough into two thin logs and then flattened them in saran wrap, froze for 30 minutes and slices them into little biscuit logs. Easy peasy, and would be easy to change up. She's happy, I'm happy, so win-win! Thanks for the recipe.

How about substituting some healthy bone broth ( like chicken) for the liquid, and maybe a healthier oil like coconut? Also, I'll try using all whole wheat flour, I don't think my pups will mind! Good to see recipes like this on Food 52! Love the picture
