It's amazing how the simplest ingredients make the most flavorful meals. Taking 3-4 items, combining them, and letting their own flavors shine through, are the type of recipes that I like to make. And that is exactly what these broiled grapefruits are about. This citrus on its own, is tart and sweet, let's not even get started on all of the nutrition values that it provides. When topped with honey, brown sugar or maple syrup it forms a caramelized crust, like a creme brulee. Now here is where you can have some fun. Of course, the citrus and the sugar topping are excellent, you don't really need to add anything. But why not add some contrasting flavors. Make it spicy. Add a pinch of salt, or even pepper! Better yet, add some herbs!

I hope you have some fun with the recipe. Enjoy it for breakfast or dessert, or how about a mid-day snack, sounds good to me! —localhaven

Ingredients
  • 2 grapefruit
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Directions
  1. Preheat broiler.
  2. Trim off both ends of grapefruit making the grapefruit flat. This is just a small cut, which helps the grapefruit not wiggle back and forth. Cut the grapefruits in half and place flesh down on a paper towel.
  3. Using a small bowl, mix together honey, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.
  4. Place the grapefruit halves in a baking dish or baking sheet face up. Sprinkle the mixture, about 1 tablespoon per halve. Broil for 7-9 minutes. Remove and let cool a few minutes before serving. Serve with yogurt, granola, ice cream, or simply enjoy on its own.
