Author Notes

Indonesia's national drink. I first had es teler at my cousin's baby shower. Her Indonesian family catered the party with classic dishes like satay, mie nasi and ayam goreng, gado gado, and es teler, which was served as dessert. After my 3rd cup, they kindly shared the recipe with me.
If you're thinking of making this drink, it helps to have an Asian grocery nearby for all the strange and delicious fruits. —sevenfaces

Ingredients
  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 2 tins tins of jackfruit
  • 1 tin tin of young coconut meat
  • 1 jar coconut gel cubes (nata de coco)
  • 1 tin nipa palm fruit (attap chee)
  • 1 tin sweetened condensed milk
  • crushed ice
Directions
  1. Drain the jackfruit and young coconut meat (reserving the syrups) and cut into 1/4'' strips. Place these into a large punch bowl.
  2. Drain the coconut gel cubes and add them to the bowl. Drain the nipa palm fruit (reserving the syrup) and add it to the bowl too.
  3. You should now have 3 tins of reserved syrup. Add an equal amount of these to the bowl - about half a cup each, more if you like the sweetness.
  4. This will dilute the sweetness a bit. Add 4 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to start, then a tablespoon at a time, stirring and tasting until it tastes as sweet as you like. I find I need around 8 tablespoons.
  5. To serve, ladle out the drink into cups, making sure everyone gets some of everything.
