Author Notes

I started getting into cocktails a few years ago after a great modern speakeasy opened in my neighborhood. Just reading the menu was an experience. There were so many ingredients I had never heard of and the bartenders operated more like modern alchemists. Many cocktails later, I felt like I had a good enough grasp of the art to attempt my own recipe made up of my favorite ingredients. The French Pirate is the happy result: rum, lime, and Falernum mixed with classic French liqueurs. Enjoy! —HungryForMore

Ingredients
  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 1 ounce Cointreau
  • .75 ounces St. Germain
  • juice one lime
  • 1 teaspoon Falernum
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 Luxardo maraschino cherry
  • 1 twist orange peel
Directions
  1. In liquid measuring cup or another vessel with a rim, combine rum, Cointreau, St. Germain, lime juice, and Falernum.
  2. Fill cocktail shaker with ice. The quality of the water in your ice really does matter. If you don't like the taste of your water straight from the tap, then you're probably not going to like the taste of it in your cocktail.
  3. Add the contents of the measuring cup to the full shaker and shake well for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour into your favorite glass.
  5. Add the 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top and swirl with orange peel.
  6. Serve with maraschino cherry and orange peel as garnish.

Will need to remake with the correct ingredients but it was great. Didn't have Cointreau so I substituted Grand Marnier and skipped the Falernum and used lemon instead of lime
