Author Notes

Grenadine is one of the most common flavorings you find mixology. But for some reason it’s hard to come across. I don’t mean you can’t find a mass market brand of red syrup sold under the name grenadine. But grenadine– at least to my way of thinking– it ain’t. Because virtually every commercial brand you will find contains little if any pomegranate juice. Good grenadine is made from pomegranate juice, and not much else. Fortunately it’s easy to make grenadine at home. —Sippity Sup (Greg Henry)

Ingredients
  • 2 cups 100% pomegranate juice (fresh squeezed, or high quality purchased)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ounce vodka (optional)
Directions
  1. Pour pomegranate juice into a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat. Let the juice come almost to a boil (but not quite to retain best color), then lower the heat to low. Simmer the mixture, watching it carefully, until reduced by half. Stir in sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat and allow it to come to room temperature. Once cool, if you’re not going to use it all right away, add about 1 ounce of vodka as a preservative.
  2. Store, covered in the refrigerator, up to one month.
