White Bean & Tuna Salad With Hard-Boiled Eggs & Dukkah

This is a super-quick throw-together that's elegant, rustic, and very tasty served with warm country bread and olive oil. The first time I had this was in Barcelona, 25 years ago. I have been making it ever since, and my only addition are the hard-boiled eggs for more oomph. The contrast of soft eggs, crunchy onions, salty tuna, and sweet beans is addictive. —olive

This recipe was both easy to prepare as well as beautiful. It was delicious on it’s own, however I added some lemon zest for freshness and flaky sea salt to finish. I loved it so much, I made it a second time using sherry vinegar in place of the lemon juice. This increased the complexity of the salad’s flavors and enhanced the nuttiness of the dukkah. I would describe it as a Spanish play on a Niçoise salad. Paired with grilled country bread and olive oil, it made for a perfect dinner. —Christa Chialtas Gault

Ingredients
  • 1 can rinsed white beans, cannellini or Northern
  • 1 can tuna of your choice, drained; hold some oil back for the dressing if you like
  • 1 small red onion, finely sliced into half moons
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half
  • 1 splash extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 handful chopped parsley and/or scallions
  • 3 dashes dukkah, a mixture of sesame seeds, ground cumin, caraway seeds, red chilis, and black pepper. This is my own mix; buy store-bought if you prefer.
Directions
  1. Place white beans and forked, flaked tuna on a platter. Strew over red onions. Season with glugs of extra-virgin olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Add freshly chopped parsley and scallions. Place eggs on top, season with dukkah, and drizzle with more olive oil. Serve with warm toasted country bread.

Delicious, no Trader Joe's anywhere in our neck of the woods so I had to google a recipe, because all of you lovely people didn't say how much of each in your Dukkah. lol Really do love this, Robin is right though, I too have tried Rancho Gordo's, dried beans and their Ayocote Blanco beans are really great in this! They have a great variety of dried beans you ought to try them the flavor is better than what you get in the store and their site has some really good recipe ideas. margo haynes

Delicious! I served over quinoa. I made my Dukkah too (toasted sesame seeds, cumin, coriander, salt, pepper & red pepper flakes). Next time would add tomatoes. Thank you!

What a wonderful and simple recipe. I used zatar in place of dukkah since I already had it in my pantry with excellent results. Thank you! This will be on regular rotation on busy summer evenings.

We ALWAYS have tuna and white beans in the pantry, so I was going to make this today because I had boiled up some eggs. Was sadly disappointed as I had neither, which shocked me! I will update you on the results when I do. :)

you guys this is GOOD. I lazily opted out of the eggs and the dukkah but was happy enough with the outcome to eat it for lunch on repeat last week. Luckily my deskmates are fishy-food friendly, something to keep in mind...

Will research Dukkah recipes. Is this a middle eastern spice mix? We have a good store nearby for those kinds of ingredients. Otherwise I could see it with Furikake which is readily available. Or just use as many ingredients of Dukkah as I have and leave it at that. Wish there was a recipe for Dukkah on here.

Laura415, there are lots of recipes online for Dukkah. From my research, every family's is different. I combine several recipes and came up with one I love. Another way to use it is to serve with chunks of French or Italian bread, a dish of olive oil and the dukkah; dip the bread in oil then dukkah and pot it in your mouth.

I made this quick and easy dish by skipping the dukkah and adding embellishments of micro greens and tri colored quinoa pulled from another tuna and white bean salad on this website. Used Tonnino brand tuna packed in olive oil, which was the basis for the dressing. Great flavor. Next time I might add a salt packed anchovy.

Hi DLGoldstein ! I don't have a recipe for the dukkah- but took a small glass and added a lot of sesame seeds and then bits and bobs of the others….it's more sesame seeds than anything else- then add good fat pinches of the cumin, fresh ground pepper, caraway seeds, and crushed red chili flakes. Hope that helps ! Enjoy ! p.s this can be stored in a spice jar in the cupboard to use on as many other dishes as you like. I always sprinkle some on scrambled eggs or avocado toast.

I love your recipe.
Thank you for bringing back some funny memories. At one point something similar like this was my brother’s favored meal; bean salad with onion, no tuna but a couple of anchovy and eggs over easy.
