Forget the apple strudel! Get the same flavor satisfaction with less effort with this simple recipe. You will love this simple, old-fashioned treat from Bosnia. We call it apples in a robe (jabuke u šlafroku) but you can find variations to this recipe under apple fritters, apple donuts, fried apple rings, apple ring pancakes and other similar names. —Jas

Ingredients
  • 2 large tart apples, like Granny Smith
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup oil for frying
  • powdered sugar
Directions
  1. Peel and core apples. Slice into ¼-inch rings. Sprinkle apple rings with sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add egg, milk, water, and vanilla, beating well.
  3. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Line a baking sheet with paper towels.
  4. Dip each apple slice in the batter, shaking off any excess then carefully lower into the oil. Do not overcrowd the pot. Flip the slices occasionally and fry until golden brown. Once the apples are golden and crispy, transfer them to the paper-towel-lined baking sheet then cool the rings on a cooling rack. This will avoid the apple rings to become soggy from the steam thus keeping them crispy longer.
  5. Serve the apple rings warm sprinkled with powdered sugar, or if you prefer more cinnamon flavor coat them in a cinnamon and sugar mixture.
