Author Notes

An 11-hour walk is also a great excuse to obsess over snacks. My friend Liz Paley introduced me to The Great Saunter, a 32-mile walk around the shoreline perimeter of Manhattan. It’s a spectacular way to take in one of the world’s great cities, appreciate its urban planning and get your steps for the month. But you'll need snacks, and Liz, who got me to Saunter in the first place, packs the best one—these energy bites that she calls “Spherical Saunter Snacks.” —Amanda Hesser

Ingredients
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup toasted coconut flakes
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter or almond butter
  • 1 mashed ripe banana (or more or less to taste)
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seeds
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup honey (or slightly less agave nectar)
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons hemp hearts
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
  1. Stir all ingredients together until thoroughly mixed; using your hands is best.
  2. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.
  3. Roll into balls of whatever size you'd like and store in the refrigerator. (It's best to let them sit in the fridge overnight before eating.) They'll stay fresh in the refrigerator for weeks.

Before starting Food52 with Merrill, I was a food writer and editor at the New York Times. I've written several books, including "Cooking for Mr. Latte" and "The Essential New York Times Cookbook." I played myself in "Julie & Julia" -- hope you didn't blink, or you may have missed the scene! I live in Brooklyn with my husband, Tad, and twins, Walker and Addison.

Perfect for cycling (long rides), hiking, kayaking, and cross-country / downhill skiing, too! These look great, and every ingredient is one I always have in my pantry. Cannot wait to try these. ;o)
