A New Way to Make Cooking Videos + a Contest

by:
January 29, 2015

Today: A video contest on Simmer -- submit a video of you demonstrating how to make your favorite Food52 recipe for a chance to win a gift certificate to our shop.

There's no doubt about it: We love burying our noses in cookbooks and teaching ourselves new tricks. But sometimes we'd rather learn and cook side-by-side with someone else -- because cooking with friends is so much better.

Shop the Story

Simmer, a new cooking video app, connects you with other awesome cooks (your family, your friends, your favorite Food52 community members) regardless of where you are. Get cooking demos and ideas right in your own kitchen -- all you need is an iPhone and a big appetite.

We want to cook with you: Take an afternoon, grab your best friend, your partner, or your kids, and make a step-by-step video showing how to cook your favorite Food52 recipe. Then upload it on Simmer and join in on the fun. (Need ideas? Check out these ones here.) And to up the ante, we'll be giving out awards -- share a link to your video in the comments, and the cooks behind our favorite videos will receive a $50 gift certificate to our shop.

In the meantime, here’s a little inspiration to get you going: Watch as Addison, Amanda's daughter (and one of the lucky recipients of Amanda's Kids' Lunch), shows the world her favorite cookie recipe:

Simmer away! Upload your video and leave a link to it in the comments no later than Monday, February 2nd.

Let's have dinner sometime. There will be champagne and ice cream for sure; everything else is up in the air.

@Pam. Is our video out of sync or are you experiencing problems? We found the interface to be problematic.

Maybe this was clear tho everyone else, but it was not clear to me. You us the app tho make the video. I thought you could upload a video to the app, so I made a video, but now there's no way to upload it ( and the dish has been eaten; oh well!!).

Somehow, I imagined Polyphemus being quite a bit more frightening than that . . . . (Maybe he has some nice cousins.) ;o)

Addison, what a fantastic job you did on your first cooking video! You explained the steps clearly, you showed us proper techniques, and, best of all, you had loads of enthusiasm. I can’t wait for your next demo!

I channel my inner Julia Child whenever I go to flip something and it doesn't quite make it. "You're alone in the kitchen. Who is going to see?"

I also love the quote, "You just have to have the courage of your convictions". I think a lot of people are scared to just dive into a recipe or technique. Sometimes you just have to have the courage to just go for it.
