A question about a recipe: Egg-topped spicy cornbread pudding

I have a question about the ingredient "masa" on the recipe "Egg-topped spicy cornbread pudding" from JessicaBakes. How does the masa change the cornbread, from other cornbreads?

Masa has a finer grain and a sweeter flavor than regular cornmeal. You could certainly make this recipe with normal cornbread but, frankly, it wouldn't be as good! :)
