I think drbabs' suggestion to add zest is a good one. Frozen OJ is concentrated so fresh OJ, while tastier to drink is not as strong a flavor as the recipe writer probably desired. Zest would provide that.
Take 1/4 c orange juice and boil it down to 2 tbsp, that will concentrate the flavor and thicken it. Use the smallest pot you have, and low heat so it doesn't burn.
