Why do my black beans keep splitting when I soak them?

I normally purchase dried black beans from the bulk bin at my coop so I am assuming they are fresh. I've had them about 6 months. Is that too old and the reason why they are splitting when I soake them?

Adding salt to the soaking water may help.
