I live off grains, the whole grain variety such as brown rice, farro, barley, whole wheat couscous, bulgur, and pseudograins like quinoa and amaranth...and I've actually lost weight and gotten much healthier overall since switching over to a plant based/whole grain style of eating. Unlike refined grains, whole grains aren't carbs, they contain carbs, but there is so much more to them like fiber and iron, etc... White rice, white pasta, white flour, etc...should be limited as these are pure carbs and don't necessarily contain the same amout of nutrients as whole grains. This is just my opinion though, based on my personal experiences. At the end of the day, you have to do what works best for you, by trial and error. I do agree with QueenSashy's mom to some degree, everything in moderation.
Grains are an essential party of an healthy diet. Do not let the fadists get to you. Sure, your white flour should be restricted but goodness, eat your grains, your sprouted grain breads, enjoy and your body will thank you.
