Back to School Essentials

August 19, 2014

Over at Provisions, we're all about collections of beautiful, useful products to help make the most of good food -- and we don't want you to miss out on the fun.

Today: Our essentials for preparing to go back to school.

Shop the Story

Summer has to end sometime. Soon the air will turn crisp and the summer heat will fade, and that means it’s back to school (or work).

You should march into fall armed with everything you need to stay organized and eat well, even as things get busier. You might have visions of whipping up caramelized peach pancakes for breakfast or greeting your kids with healthy yogurt and berry tarts in the afternoon, but once school starts -- and work ramps up -- you don’t always have the time.

More: Pack a lunch that everyone will love.

That’s where today’s Provisions collection comes in. We rounded up some of the things that help us tackle busy weekdays, like these waxed canvas lunch bags from Vermont and this handmade walnut-handled sandwich spreader from Boston knifemakers R. Murphy

Our favorite thing? The scratch-off lunchbox notes. If someone tucked one of these into our lunches, well, we’d happily get up for 8 AM class.

More: It's not lunch without dessert; here are the best bars and cookies to pack.

And if the thought of freshly sharpened pencils isn’t enough to get you excited, maybe you’ll be ready to crack open the books with a linen notebook or a pretty felt iPad holder in hand.

So dust off your coffee maker, unearth your pencil cases, and get ready for fall. Because back-to-school time means that tailgates, Halloween, and apple-picking are right around the corner.

Tell us, what are your best tips for getting ready to head back to school?

I like warm homemade bread slathered with fresh raw milk butter, ice cream in all seasons, the smell of garlic in olive oil, and sugar snap peas fresh off the vine.
