Remembering David Bowie

January 11, 2016

Every photoshoot day, before the first recipe comes out of the test kitchen, and the props start to pile up next to the sink, we pick out a playlist or artist to listen to. And today, it went without saying, our photographer on set, Bobbi Lin, turned on David Bowie.

Shepherd's Pie, David Bowie's favorite food, according to his most recent label, Columbia Records.

Last night, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar, David Bowie, the infinitely influential rock star died from cancer. And we blasted the photoshoot speakers a little louder than usual—with everything from Ziggy Stardust to Young Americans so our entire team could listen.

Our Merchandising Manager, Hannah Wilken, said "Life on Mars?" was the first song she ever fell in love with. And our Design & Home Editor, Amanda Sims, said she has always loved the song "Space Oddity." Our UI Design and Developer, Ryan Merrill, even shared a photo of his dog, "Ellie Sane," having a moment of uncanny resemblance to the Aladdin Sane album cover.

It's impossible to pay appropriate homage to a man so versatile, transcendent, and influential not only to music but also to the culture of the late 20th century—and still, today—but listening to his music is a good place to start:

What are some of your favorite David Bowie memories? We'd love to hear them in the comments below.

His version of Peter and the Wolf was the soundtrack of my childhood. My mom was very progressive and obsessed with him - I lost her 15 years ago. Thinking of both of them today.

My friend Amy & I got press tickets for the Glass Spider tour- they were behind the stage - we saw him before anyone else did as he climbed the scaffold - being teenagers girls we squealed loudly in utter delight- he turned towards us and slowly put his finger to his lips and winked .... We melted.

I was lucky enough to have worked with David Bowie on his Tin Machine project. Great man and my heart breaks for the loss of him. RIP David Bowie...
