My fave water bottle is the S’well Traveler. This bottle has a wide mouth and is triple-layered whereas the original, that was tested for this article is only double-layered with a small mouth. I’ve had ice cubes last for 18-24 or more hours and hot water stay piping hot for at least 6-10 hours depending on how many times I opened it to take a sip. It’s also super durable, which, for a klutz like me, is a plus!

Just came back from a wilderness backpacking trip in the Rockies (west side of RMNP). While we were out on one overnight - meaning our car was in the hot sun in the lot at the trailhead for about 36 hours - my Zojirushi insulated travel mug performed like a champ. I left it about half full, in that very hot car. The water was still pleasantly cool when we got back. The tumbler has a clever flip top that easily opens with the same hand that's holding the tumbler, too. I think it's Wirecutter's favorite. It certainly is mine. ;o)

I have a stainless steel wide mouth Bubba tumbler that was originally used for coffee. I'm now using it for my at night water bottle. I fill it with ice cubes and water before bed. There is still ice in it in the morning.

Whoa. You wash your water bottle once a week? Really? Perhaps an article on how often to wash your water bottle would be of interest. ;o)

I've got 3 of the above.
My yeti rambler I love just be careful, I find when in the van when I pick it up for a sip (got a flip top straw lid) after rolling between the seats, it can squirt liquid out. Oddly pressure builds up inside it even with just water? It's nice that you can buy different tops for it or replacements unlike most brands.
My contingo which is perfect when driving. Doesn't leak and you can lock the top so you don't accidentally trigger the drink button.
When I use to work in an office, I would use my swell for hot water for topping up my tea so I wouldn't have to keep going to the kitchen and it worked well for this :)

I used to do Bikram yoga (108°F and humid for 90 minutes) which is punishing for a water bottle, but my 32-oz hydroflask bottle was up to the task and it has never leaked! It’s 6 years old and although it’s got a few scrapes and one dent of unknown origin, works like a charm.

I have a 24 oz Contigo I received as a teacher gift about 5 years ago. It is a bit scratched and dented (the stickers cover most of them), but keeps water cold all day and into the next (if I forget to drink it). It has a convenient flip top to cover the drinking spout, a press button to open the drinking spout and a handy flip up handle. It fits nicely in my car cup holder as well as the side pocket of my backpack. The best bottle I’ve ever had!

OK but the WEIGHT of some of these bottles is crazy! Anyone have a light weight suggestion?

A friend gave me the SLM (Simple Modern) 28oz water bottle as a gift and I love it! It's become my go-to water "glass" at home since it keeps my water cold without ice. I used to use a boring, ugly blue plastic tumbler and this is so much nicer and keeps my water cold. Here's the link from Amazon and there are multiple design and color options.

I feel like ease of cleaning, especially mouth pieces, is an important factor for these.

YETI is the only one I purchase anymore, mainly for its durability and ability to insulate cold water. Their colors aren’t as fun as other brands but the product is the best hands down.

You all need to check these water bottles out. www.puristcollective.com They are by far the best insulated on the market. Will keep cold water cold for up to 24 hours, hot for up to 12 hours and come in three different sizes, three different inter-changeable tops. And the best part is what they are made out of. These bottles are designed so that you will not experience a hint of taste, thanks to the innovative technology of transforming silicon dioxide, one of the most fundamental elements on earth into a flawless glass interior. Each bottle is made of surgical-grade stainless steel, and the glass interior will resist any aftertaste.

I'm on Team Hydro Flask! I love the various sizes, colors, and how they keep water truly cold or hot for 24 hours or more. They did change the size of the opening a few years back. I like the old size, but I think the new size is better for adding ice. That may be why you didn't give it winning points.

We love our Zojirushi (https://www.zojirushi.com/app/category/vacuum-insulated-mugs-bottles) products. Keeps the temp you want and holds up for years!

My kids have been taking Contigos to school for several years now. They're the only ones I've found that can survive rough and tumble little boys without costing a fortune.

It would be interesting to know if the results would be any different if you were in a really hot place. I had a Corkcicle canteen with me, filled with ice water, to the takeout at Greenwood below Coloma on the South Fork of the American River in El Dorado County one September day when the thermometer in my car said it was 110 degrees (I believe it!!). Anyone who kayaks on that stretch knows how blistering hot the parking area is, mid-afternoon. The water in my canteen was ice cold about an hour later. A few cubes may have melted. I don't know how cold the water would have been after five or six hours, but I do know that for shorter term use, that container was fantastic. No water ever lasts more than a few hours in any insulated container I own, as I tend to drink a lot of water, so it's all consumed fairly quickly. ;o)

I love my Kinto! (The one with the lid that doubles as a handle.) I have the orange one, and it spends all day with me at work, then joins me at the table for dinner haha. I'm almost never without it. It doesn't hurt that it's pretty too.
