Wish I had downsized much sooner than I did, but not ready for less than 1000 square feet. And I am one person and a dog. Realize how the culture of house envy affects and other consumer culture issues affect spending decisions, and while I love having a nice home, I now think of it like I think of art. I can’t own all of the art I desire, but I can enjoy museums and galleries and learn not to covet everything I like. Same with other people’s homes.

We’ve lived in both settings. Very large house, then apartment in nyc for years and now back in the suburbs. The bigger space wins every time for just about everything.
Granted we no longer have the museum next door, the Met or Broadway but we can go into the city for an evening or a day. Now we get to enjoy the space every single day. Our kids love space in the backyard to run around, our teenagers like and need their own space, much easier to buy groceries and things and put in our car, etc. But everyone loves to hang out together in the family room so we’re close when we want to be, which is often, but we can get space when we need it. Entertaining is a breeze now which we just love to do and do it often and love entertaining guests for overnights. It’s a win win win and no loss. Oh and it’s QUIET!! Ahhh…

All of the reasons for living small are spot on and I especially agree with being close with family. We moved from a duplex, bigger apartment and now live in a ~900 sf 2-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. We realize that we've become closer as a family because of the smaller distance between each room and each other. The 4 of us could be in the galley kitchen together while cooking and watching TV that is in the living room a few feet away and talk and laugh. The other reason that resonates is less space to clean, and we're conditioned to be conscious of what we bring into the home and thereby what we spend money on. We use much less energy and resource being in a smaller space. We use less water because there's no lawn to water, or car to wash, less time to clean, etc. We walk every where (groceries, library, park, school) and use the subway or bus to get farther into Manhattan or to work). Sure do we sometimes wish we have the expanse of a suburban home like all of my relatives? Yes, but we still prefer the life living smaller, and being in the city.

We live in Cumberland, Maine where the schools are fabulous. We chose to live in a small three bedroom, one bath home. Our two children and hubs love being close knit doing homework at the kitchen table, showering while someone is brushing their teeth, and another using the toilet. Oh my you say? We never lacked privacy because this is what we’ve ever known. In turn, this affords us to ski all winter, beach all summer, hike all fall. Looking back, our children are living happily small by doing exactly how they were raised, which brings a seal of approval to my heart. Mom to a fighter pilot, and a critical care Physician Associate. Married, with time to ski, hike, beach, and travel. History repeating itself.

I love that living small gave you time to "ski all winter, beach all summer, hike all fall." Thank you for sharing Mimi!

I would write the exact same list! I really love the point you make about closeness. I believe that is very true and probably not something many would think of.
And I would add a sixth point- it’s a very sustainable way to live. Our carbon footprint is much smaller than a typical family of four. We take up less space on the planet and use fewer resources!

Yes to living small = living sustainably and our small footprints! It's one of the reasons I am passionate about providing inspiration and solutions for living small.
