The Kitchn: One-Ingredient Ice Cream

We found a fun Memorial Day project for you and your kids: take those spotty bananas and strawberries and stick them in your freezer NOW! And we'll let The Kitchn explain the rest. By the end of the day, you'll have your first single ingredient (well, sort of) ice cream!

Before starting Food52 with Merrill, I was a food writer and editor at the New York Times. I've written several books, including "Cooking for Mr. Latte" and "The Essential New York Times Cookbook." I played myself in "Julie & Julia" -- hope you didn't blink, or you may have missed the scene! I live in Brooklyn with my husband, Tad, and twins, Walker and Addison.

I didn't freeze them first (but great idea!)... I put them in my ice cream maker. Here's a recipe I posted last year. http://www.food52.com/recipes/13812_banana_sorbet_with_chocolate_and_peanut_butter

I make this a lot actually and it is a nice thing to have if you can't eat dairy or avoid eating it anyway...I like to put cinammon on pureed frozen banana and eat it that way straight up...would be great blended with frozen mango or raspberries too...sometimes I add cocoa and instant espresso powder to the banana as well...also excellent to add some vanilla extract to it and some alternative milk if you can't digest cream (I would suggest soy but if you cannot have soy milk (like me) than I would recommend coconut milk or rice milk or flax milk which I've recently discovered)... :)
