Enter: The Bacon Sundae

June 20, 2012

Does the integration of bacon into desserts still excite you? Burger King, evidently, thinks it might.

Introduced during a current climate of health consciousness, the Bacon Sundae - a fat-laden confection comprised of fudgy soft serve strewn with bacon bits - raises a few questions. Following so close on the heels of proposed soft drink and foie gras bans, the release of such a profoundly unhealthy menu item feels, as the New Yorker puts it, awkward, and as such, has received controversial reviews.

This article looks at Burger King’s latest calorie bomb through a cultural, corporate, and culinary lens, concluding that its release isn’t just about capitalizing on shock value, or trying to jump on a culinary bandwagon (however late it may be). Rather, reactions to the somewhat viral ice-cream-cum-pork novelty reveal that judgments about food are inextricably tied to those about class.

Of course, larger implications aside, taste still matters. Is it any good? According to this article, it was actually not that bad. After reading this, though, we’re not sure we'll ever be able to look it the same way again.

I have a thing for most foods topped with a fried egg, a strange disdain for overly soupy tomato sauce, and I can never make it home without ripping off the end of a newly-bought baguette. I like spoons very much.
