How much air circulation do onions, garlic, and potatoes require? Would a draw that just had air on one side provide enough for them? Any other thoughts on how to improve air circulation?

Before I can get this I need a place to call mine! Impossible in a rented space. For now, I am happy with my bamboo steamer storage. I store onions and potatoes in bamboo steamer, it adds to kitchen decor...also...and they also have holes to let the air pas through...

Does this drawer have a solid bottom? If not, I could see how this would be a rather messy "solution". I rather like keeping all those wispy bits of dry onion and garlic skin out of the way (in my and I suspect in most other people's cases, on the floor of the pantry). With this set up, I'd be sweeping my kitchen floor (as much for safety as anything else . . . have you ever slipped on a dry onion skin?) every time I opened the drawer. ;o)

I agree, I have a solid bottom drawer with air-hole sides-- it really does need cleaning often, garlic and onion skins and dirt... but keeps them all together.

AJ - I had exactly the same response when I saw that photo! Great idea, but the execution needs a little work...

How utterly bizarre that the onions and potatoes are piled together in the bin used for that photo! Obviously the people who styled and took it don't cook (or perhaps they just don't know better). I'm not sure I'd even want my potatoes and onions in separate but adjacent bins, given those tiny air holes. ;o)

I thought the same thing! Isn't there a hard and fast rule about not storing your potatoes and onions in the same basket because the onions will cause the potatoes to sprout. Is this just a myth?
