Rising Food Prices due to Animal Slaughter

If farmers are unable to afford feeding their livestock, they are unable to keep them alive. Thanks to the worst drought the U.S. has seen in years, this is the dark reality for farmers all over the world who are now forced to slaughter their farm animals. The Guardian reports that this international slaughter of pigs and cattle is slated to push food prices up by 14 percent. 

We recently covered the close relationship between droughts and meat consumption, and it appears that the West's affinity for meat consumption is at risk once again, as consumers have to bear the brunt of rising meat prices in 2013. Though this is violent and dark news to read, it is essential that we understand how our food system is intricately linked to the climate.
