You can also do what I do -- peel it, wrap the dark, soft banana in plastic wrap, put it on a freezer bag, and stick it in the freezer. Use it frozen in a smoothie or use it thawed in a recipe such as banana bread. Frozen bananas thaw very quickly.

I don't even bother to peel and wrap in plastic, just freeze the whole banana and then thaw & squeeze out of the peel when needed.

HP, you must have more room in your freezer than I do! ;-)

I tend to purchase smaller bananas ;)

I peel them and toss them in a freezer bag without wrapping them. They do stick together a bit but I've not had any problems getting them apart when I want to make smoothies or bake with them. They normally sit in the freezer for at most a month or two before they get used.

Dark as in old? Because if that's the case, then yes! It will be a bit mushy (perfect for a banana bread situation) and probably quite sweet.
