This recipe was inspired by a friend of mine that lives in Hawaii. She has a jaboticaba shrub growing on her property. A little while ago she was telling another friend of ours and myself about the fruit on the tree. We asked her to try making a jelly out of it, and then of course send us some. She had never canned anything before and we were sort of far away to be able to help her, so her first attempt ended up being more of a syrup. Her second attempt resulted in a jelly and she sent us jars of each. The syrup is perfect for making soda with. The fruit remimded me of something between a blackberry and a cranberry and so with a little tinkering I came up with my mock jaboticaba syrup. —Dabblings

Ingredients
- Blackberry Cranberry Syrup

3 cups
blackberries

2 cups
cranberries
-
3/4 cup
sugar
- Mock Jaboticaba Pop

8 ounces
seltzer water

Combine the berries and the sugar in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring to disolve the sugar.

Once the berry mixture has come to a boil reduce the heat to low and simmer the berry mixture for 10 minutes; until the cranberries have split. Using a wooden spoon smoosh all the berries into a pulp to release all the juices.

Strain the mixture into a clean container and refrigerate until ready to use.

In the bottom of a glass spoon in 2-3 tablespoons of the blackberry cranberry syrup. Add in the seltzer.

Stir the two to combine them. Toss in a couple of ice cubes and serve.
