Author Notes

I found myself on a cold winter's day with about 2-1/2 lbs. of lovely little sweet potatoes. I wanted a one-dish meal that would be warm and filling. We love shepard's pie, so I thought I'd make something similar and it was delicious! —karpenko

  2. Saute the onions in the oil until they start becoming transulcent, add the grated carrots and garlic, saute until soft. Add the chopped meat and cook until all the meat is brown. Add the raisins and pine nuts, spices, tomato paste , water and wine. Stir and taste and add salt and pepper as needed. 2. Cook the sweet potatoes until soft, drain and mash. Add butter and cream and stir together until smooth. Add salt as necessary
  3. Put cooked meat mixture into the bottom of an 8"X11" oven proof casserole dish. Cover with mashed sweet potatoes. You may make lines along the top with the tines of a fork for decoration if you wish. Dot with butter (5 or six small pieces).
  4. Bake at 350 deg. F. for 20-25 minutes until brownish and bubbly. This dish may be made the day before and baked just before serving.Add another 10 minutes or so of baking time if it is cold from the refrigerator.
