I found myself on a cold winter's day with about 2-1/2 lbs. of lovely little sweet potatoes. I wanted a one-dish meal that would be warm and filling. We love shepard's pie, so I thought I'd make something similar and it was delicious! —karpenko

Ingredients

grated carrots

minced garlic cloves

1 pound
chopped beef or dark meat turkey

white raisins

pine nuts

2 teaspoons
cinnamon

1-1/2 teaspoons
allspice

tomato paste

1/2 cup
dry white wine

3/4 cup
water

salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

olive oil
- Mashed sweet potatoes

2 1/2 pounds
peeled sweet poatoes, cut into large chunks

butter + more to dot on top

heavy cream

salt to taste
Directions

Saute the onions in the oil until they start becoming transulcent, add the grated carrots and garlic, saute until soft. Add the chopped meat and cook until all the meat is brown. Add the raisins and pine nuts, spices, tomato paste , water and wine. Stir and taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Cover and cook on a medium low flame for about 15 minutes.Add water if it looks too dry (it should be somewhat "saucy" but not too liquid). Turn off the heat.
- Mashed sweet potatoes

Cook the sweet potatoes until soft, drain and mash. Add butter and cream and stir together until smooth. Add salt as necessary

Put cooked meat mixture into the bottom of an 8"X11" oven proof casserole dish.
Cover with mashed sweet potatoes. You may make lines along the top with the tines of a fork for decoration if you wish. Dot with butter (5 or six small pieces).

Bake at 350 deg. F. for 20-25 minutes until brownish and bubbly.
This dish may be made the day before and baked just before serving.Add another 10 minutes or so of baking time if it is cold from the refrigerator.
