Author Notes

I love cereal, breakfast, lunch dinner or dessert it's one of my favorite meals. I often sub cereal for flour when I make a crumble, it's crunchy and delicious and makes a wonderful topping for your favorite fruit crumble. I used apples in this recipe but you can use the fruit of your choice, The crumble is made from Uncle Sam's cereal, it's whole wheat flakes and flax seed and has no added sugar. The topping is crunchy and delicious. I like to serve while warm with ice cream or cream. Add spice of your choice, this recipe is simple and open to interpretation but I do recommend using Uncle Sam's cereal. —sdebrango

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (I used grade B)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter + more to butter ramekins

  • pinch of nutmeg
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 2-3 apples (I used granny smith) peeled, cored, and sliced

Directions
  1. Pre heat oven to 375, butter the ramekins or baking dish
  2. Add Uncle Sam's, oats, brown sugar, maple syrup, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and sea salt to mixing bowl and mix with your fingers until combined. It will be chunky looking
  3. Distribute apples in ramekins or baking dish, add the crumble topping, pressing down as you add. (Be generous with the crumble) Drizzle a tablespoon of orange juice or apple cider on top of each.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream, cream, creme fraiche or mascarpone. Enjoy

I have loved to cook for as long as I can remember, am self taught learning as I go. I come from a large Italian family and food was at the center of almost every gathering. My grandfather made his own wine and I remember the barrels of wine in the cellar of my grandfathers home, I watched my mother and aunts making homemade pasta and remember how wonderful it was to sit down to a truly amazing dinner. Cooking for me is a way to express myself its my creative outlet. I enjoy making all types of food but especially enjoy baking, I live in Brooklyn, NY, and I share my home with my two dogs Izzy and Nando. I like to collect cookbooks and scour magazines and newspapers for recipes. I hope one day to organize them.

I love apple crumble! I'm unfamiliar with Uncle Sam's - is it available in most grocery stores, or a specialty item?

In the west coast I buy it at Safeway. But you can also buy it on Amazon. It is excellent cereal and very good for you too! Going to make the crumble next week and will write a review then. Happy baking!
