An old family recipe —JERRY
Ingredients

dates; chopped

1 cup
black walnuts; chopped

1 cup
water; boiling

1 cup
granulated sugar

2 tablespoons
shortening

large egg

1 cup
general purpose flour

1 teaspoon
baking soda

1 teaspoon
baking powder
Directions

Stir the dates and nuts into the boiling water, and let this set while preparing the batter.

Cream well the sugar, shortening and egg - beat a lot.

Add the flour, baking soda and baking powder. Stir in the date/nut mixture.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.

Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream, caramel sauce or ice cream.
