Author Notes

On a recent visit to California my grandmother gave me this gem of a recipe, it was one her mother used to make. Though it seems simple it is surprisingly delicious and packs a great punch from all the orange zest. —bronxbaker

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup Softened butter (unsalted)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • pinch salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 ground orange, using a grinder attachment on a mixer would probably work, as would a food processor. I used a hand grinder the first time around and finely minced the zest and pith the second time. I do not recommend using a blender.
  • 1 cup ground raisins, see above.
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream butter and sugar then add the beaten eggs, ground orange and raisins.
  3. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. Add the milk to the butter, sugar mixture then the sifted flour mixture. Pour into a 9 by 13 inch pan and bake for 30 minutes.
