Versatile, easy, recipe a friend gave me. It can be changed up with different additions... she made orange with dried cranberry, which I tried...delicious! I’ve made dark chocolate chips with orange rind, which are amazing. Next I’m doing toasted almonds with orange rind. Savory would be interesting. Ingredients
  • Scone batter
  • 2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Grated orange rind
  • 1/2 cup Stick cold unsalted butter
  • 1 cup *Buttermilk
  • 2/3 cup Dark chocolate chips
  • Icing
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Orange rind grated
  • 2 tablespoons Milk
Directions
  1. Prepare baking sheet line with parchment paper. Oven: 400 degrees Batter: Sift all dry ingredients together.
  2. Cut butter in small pieces; toss with dry ingredients
  3. Place mixture in food processor and pulse until butter/flour look like meal.
  4. Place back in mixing bowl, add orange rind, toss until blended. Make a 'well' in flour, pour in buttermilk, fold until mixed. Dough will be thick, like cookie dough.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips. Do not mix! Scoop 1/3 c. Mounds of Mixture onto parchment lined cookie sheets.
  6. Bake 15 minutes. 400 degree oven
  7. Remove from oven, cool completely
  8. Icing: sift one cup powdered sugar
  9. Add orange rind and milk. Hand beat until smooth.
  10. Drizzle over scones.
  11. *If you don't have buttermilk, substitute 3/4 C. Whole milk yogurt and 1/4 C. Milk (whatever you have on hand 2%, whole milk). Mix together and add to dry ingredients. Batter will be thick like cookie dough,

My husband made these and it was his first time ever baking! I had been looking for a recipe that was comparable to scones we had in Palm Desert and not having any luck. Well he found this recipe and on his first try he nailed it! These are crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Loved loved loved them!!! Thank you

Cloudlike! We made these and used dried cranberries and pecans in place of dark chocolate with a maple glaze in place of the frosting to use up ingredients we had on hand. We also used a hand mixer (no cuisinart where we were visiting). The results were amazing! So good you'll begin to think you could open your own B&B.
