Author Notes

This is our morning routine breakfast prepared for my two kids, Abby (4) and Brody (18 months). It takes only about 5 minutes total time and is healthy, nutritious and keeps them going all morning. I cook everything in a large Duralex Picardie Bistro tumbler, so clean up is also easy-peasy. Kids love it because it's a little sweet from the bananas and the cherries break up the monotony of the oatmeal. If you don't have bananas, a drizzle of honey is also good and dried cranberries can be used instead of cherries. You can easily sub out the milk for non-dairy milk (e.g., almond, cashew) and the fruits for whatever is easy to mash up with a spoon. —Wayne Pan

What You'll Need
Ingredients
  • 1 cup rolled, organic oats
  • 2 cups whole organic milk
  • 1 organic banana
  • 1 handful frozen organic sweet dark cherries
Directions
  1. The evening before, add the oats and milk to a tall glass tumbler so that the oats and milk take up about a quarter of the volume. Refrigerate covered overnight.
  2. In the morning, put the tumbler in the microwave and cook on high for 2 minutes. Watch while cooking the first time in case the mixture bubbles up too vigorously.
  3. Add one sliced banana into the hot oatmeal and mush everything together with a tablespoon (about 1 minute). Add a handful of frozen cherries and stir until well mixed (about 1 minute). By the time the cherries are incorporated, the oatmeal will be at room temperature and ready to eat.
