Author Notes

At some point a few years ago, I started thinking about tea and cocktails. Just like with anything, you can make a drink work. In this case, gin, earl grey tea, with some maple syrup. What's not to love, oh and of course the lift of the lemon. This is an easy-drinking cocktail that you can batch if you want, or just enjoy a few. It also allows you to try out some of the different flavors of earl grey too, which Allison Sanchez wrote about a few months ago. —Jacob K Thomas

Ingredients
  • For the earl grey tea
  • 1 cup Boiling Water, between 200 F and 212 F
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Loose Earl Grey Tea
  • The Cocktail
  • 2 ounces Earl Grey Tea
  • 2 ounces Gin
  • 1 ounce Maple Syrup
  • 3/4 ounce Lemon Juice
  • Fresh Mint or Dried Rose Petals for garnish, optional
Directions
  1. For the earl grey tea
  2. Bring your water to a boil. Put your loose tea in a tea ball, or if you have sachets, put your loose tea in there. Pour water over tea and let it steep for at least 5 minutes. The longer you can it steep the stronger your tea. Keep this in mind with the cocktail. Alternatively, if your tea is in a bag, just pour your water over your tea, then let it steep for your desired amount of time. At least 5 minutes is suggested. Let tea cool to room temperature.

  2. In a rocks glass add ice and set aside. In your cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients, except for the garnish. Fill the shaker with ice and put the cap on. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, or until the shaker is extremely cold.
  3. Strain cocktail into your prepared rocks glass and garnish with mint or rose petals, if using. Serve immediately.
