Author Notes

The original recipe comes from my all-time favorite cookbook; I adapted this by switching out the White Cake Mix initially called for to a Red Velvet one, which I think is the main reason why these bars taste so good! During the summertime, I love delivering small batches of these treats to my neighbors and close friends. —Swara Bhatt

What You'll Need
  • 1 packet Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • 0.5 cups Applesauce
  • 1/3 cup Canola Oil
  • 14 ounces Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips
  • 0.25 cups Unsalted Butter, Cubed
  1. In a large bowl, combine the dry cake mix, eggs, and oil. Press two-thirds of the mixture into a greased 13x9 inch baking pan. Set remaining cake batter aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk, chocolate chips, and butter. Microwave uncovered until chips and butter are melted; stir until smooth. Pour over crust.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of remaining cake mixture over top. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely, then overnight, before cutting
