Chili dogs are a classic for sure, but the sweet/savory combo of sloppy joes has been woefully neglected. And don’t skip the pickle here, the delicious crunch is a delight. —SP
Ingredients
-
• Half a large white onion, diced
-
• Whole bell pepper, diced (use a sweeter red or yellow pepper)
-
3
Garlic cloves
-
1 pound
Lean ground beef
-
1 tablespoon
Neutral oil
-
1/2 tablespoon
Worcestershire sauce
-
12 ounces
Chili sauce
-
1 teaspoon
Brown sugar
-
1
S. Rosen’s Brioche Hot Dog Buns
-
1
Vienna Beef hot dog, prepared your favorite way
-
1
Pickle spear, cut in half lengthwise
-
• Shredded cheese (we used cheddar, but pepper jack is great if you want to add a kick)
Directions
-
1. Prepare the Sloppy Joe first. With one Tbsp. of oil, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Once browned, add the white onion and bell pepper, then cover and cook for 5-6 minutes. Remove cover and add diced garlic, stir until fragrant, then add Worcestershire sauce and stir again. At this point add the chili sauce and brown sugar. Lower to medium-low heat and cook covered for 5 minutes until the mixture darkens. Add salt if needed, then set aside.
-
2. To assemble: Place cooked hot dog in bun, top with sloppy joe mix, then add the pickle spear and shredded cheddar cheese.
