Vintage Copper Oval Gratin Dish, Late 19th Century
Vintage Copper Oval Gratin Dish, Late 19th Century
One great gratin.
This is hefty, impeccably restored oval gratin dish (c. 1919) features thick brass ring handles on either end for you to grab hold of and slightly flared edging. The dish’s underside is stamped with “Helvetia” and both the Swiss and British flags, because while the copper came from Switzerland, the pieces were made in England. The dish is also stamped with the name of its maker, “Leon Jaeggi & Sons Manufacturing Coppersmiths of London and Staines.” Pile in sliced potatoes, grate cheese over the top, and wow your holiday guests when you set it down on the table. We think it would also make a heck of a tray: Stack your mail in it or use it to keep your bits and pieces tidy on your dresser.
