Simple, organic, useful.

We gave 20 of our favorite ceramicists a mission: to create a mug that best represents their aesthetic. And boy, did they deliver! The result is something we’re very excited to present: A very-special, very-unique collection of limited-edition mugs—all exclusive to Food52 (like the design on this very page!).

According to Asya Palatova (founder of Gleena Ceramics), getting a handle on a mug (er, excuse the pun) is the trickiest part. There’s a scientific secret to making sure the balance is just-right and comfortable to hold when filled with liquid. Luckily, she’s taken care of all that so we can sit back and sip our latte. In calming blue hues, this piece also boasts a circular handle that makes it extra-endearing (and easy-to-carry too).

Meet the Maker

Gleena Ceramics

Cleveland Heights, OH
Founded in 2002 by Asya Palatova, “gleena” means “clay” in Russian. All gleena tableware pieces are porcelain and are handmade by Asya in her studio in Cleveland, Ohio. Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Asya spent her early childhood summers at her family dacha, a Russian country house. A gathering place for friends and family and surrounded by her grandmother's carefully tended gardens and apple trees, the dacha is a source of endless inspiration for Asya's organic shapes. Influenced by her Russian upbringing in St. Petersburg and her graphic design experiences, Asya merges classical and modern to develop objects with a purity of form that compel people to touch and use them.
