Miami has a LOT of good food to offer. I moved to South Beach last year and find myself craving the tacos and tortas from Bodega Taco & Tequila bar. (Check their website for the live music schedule.) Rather than the "avoid South Beach" generality, I would specifically avoid the touristy Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road. Yardbird has sublime fried chicken but is on the fancy side and if you're in the mood for the seasonal South FL stone crab specialty, there's always the Take Out (casual dress) section of the venerable Joe's Stone Crab in South Pointe.
Not sure what dope means either. Vacationed here for the last week and have eaten up and down the spectrum of expense and ethnicity. Had great meals everywhere including Whole Foods. The one thing I did avoid was South Beach. The Financial district had tons of great lunch options. La Sandwicherie is supposed to be great but we never made it there. Took a detour for the best Conch fritters ever to Key Largo at Alabama Jacks and it is worth the trip!
