I see there's a product on Amazon called "luxury dried fruit," whose ingredient list shows raisins, sultanas, currants, candied cherries and candied orange peel. Given that this recipe already calls for candied cherries and candied mixed peel, I would use a combination of dark raisins, yellow raisins, currants (which in the US are a type of raisin - "Zante" raisins), dried cherries and dried cranberries - using disproportionately more of the latter two, as their tartness will balance the sweetness of everything else in this cake. I'd also look for the tartest dried apricots I could find, for the same reason. ;o)
