Smoked Salmon and Butter Sandwiches

If you like reading what Amanda feeds her kids, you'll love taking a look into what other people -- both in the food world and the world at large -- prepare for their own children (and occasionally their signifcant others and maybe even their pets). Prepare to be either resentful or appreciative of your own parents.

Today's lunch comes from China Millman, mother of Mirabelle, director of merchandising at Mouth, and wife to Food52's very own Michael Hoffman. 

Mirabelle is a pretty typical almost-two-year-old in that something she loves one day might go straight onto the floor the next. And if she's having a particularly picky day, getting her astronaut (a.k.a. "baby") to take the first bite is sometimes necessary.

Fortunately, there are usually a few favorites to rely on from week to week, like this open-faced butter and smoked salmon sandwich (Mirabelle's mouth is too small to handle real sandwiches yet). It's sharing the plate with cut up grapes and cucumber sticks, but we usually serve her meal in courses, with whatever she likes the most last, because the second she spots the smoked salmon ("Sal-mon! Sal-mon!"), the rest of the meal is basically dog food—as in she throws all the cucumber sticks to the quivering Jack Russell Terrier waiting below her high chair.
