In Sierra Leone, breakfast is groundnut butter and bananas on pita bread (and lots of coffee):
I recently moved to Freetown, Sierra Leone, and one of my early challenges was figuring out what to eat for breakfast. West African food is too spicy and oily for me to eat on a daily basis (especially in the morning), but groceries at the Western super markets leave something to be desired: expired cereal, overpriced dairy, and mealy oatmeal. While they do carry Western peanut butter, I don’t like the kind with hydrogenated oil and sugar added. Finding this creamy, delicious, additive-free groundnut butter at the local market was thus a game-changer! I think I love it even more than natural peanut butter back home because I found it at a time when I was ready to give up on enjoying breakfast. Nowadays, my go-to weekday breakfast is groundnut butter and sliced bananas (usually two because bananas here are smaller) sandwiched in pita bread (which I get at the Lebanese market), along with Nescafe instant coffee. It’s delicious and filling, something I would definitely replicate in the States! Now all I need is a good coffee maker… #f52grams #bobsbreakfast
